Darnytskyi Bridge

Actually it's unique complex of two bridges stand just 40 meters one from other. One of the bridge has a name Darnytskyi Bridge and the new one's official name is Railroad and automobile bridge over the Dnipro river in Kyiv, but commonly known as New Darnytskyi Bridge. Nowadays people usually call whole complex as New Darnytkyi Bridge or just Darnytskyi Bridge as it always was and accept the complex as one bridge.
The first bridge on the site was built in 1868-1870 by Alexander Struve project. The bridge had 11 spans and 12 towers over 89 meters each. The total length of the bridge was 1067.6 meters. The bridge had a one railway track. Supports of the bridge were built with decompression technology. 12 February 1870 during testing, a special test train consisting of six locomotives passed the bridge.
In June 1920 the bridge was blown up by the retreating Polish troops. But was restored by 10 of September 1920. In September 1941 the bridge was destroyed again by Soviet troops during the retreat at the time of WWII. During the German occupation the bridge was restored, but was completely destroyed by German soldiers in late October - early November of 1943 when Nazi retreat. After the liberation of Kyiv in November 1943 just for 14 days and nights, from 7 to 20 November 1943, the temporary railroad bridge was erected at the place. And in the spring of 1944 was replaced by a temporary highland railroad bridge.
The whole new bridge which exist now (Darnytskyi Bridge) was built little to the south of the former bridge designed by Struve. Bridge was constructed in 1946-1950. Bridge has two railroad tracks and designed by asymmetric scheme. Toward the left bank are three major navigable spans over 106 m, covered arched metal trusses with train traffic at the bottom. Shallow right bank of the river part is covered with twelve smaller (around 53 m) monolithic reinforced concrete arches.
The New Darnytskyi Bridge is a combined automobile and railroad bridge The bridge carries a double track rail line and is built to accommodate six lanes of automobile traffic. Construction was started in July 2004.
Additional railroad links to match the new bridges' capacity are also being constructed. The bridge's expected capacity is 60,000 vehicles and 120 pairs of trains per day. The new 1066,2 m (3,609 ft)-span costs more than $700 million. Its construction was ordered by the state-owned Ukrzaliznytsia rail company and financed by the government, and the Kyiv municipality co-sponsors the project.
On the 7 of May 2010 the bridge was tested with first electrified train traffic. On the 27 of September 2010 the railroad segment of the bridge was officially opened; on the 31 of March 2011, automobile road traffic was opened.
So the complex now has 4 railway tracks and six lanes of automobile traffic. Today it's the biggest traffic bridge over the Dnieper river.
